Bringing life back to Elmete!

2nd Oct 2020

Greenfingers are delighted to have worked on a recent CSR project contributing towards the completion of the Community Orchard at the Elmete Estate. What used to be an unused open grassland area, often falling victim to dog fouling, is now a beautiful garden that can be enjoyed by all members of the community.

The garden was originally requested by a group of green-fingered tenants hoping to achieve a space where they could specifically grow their own fruit and vegetables. Located central to the large estate it’s situated on, the garden has a small orchard with fruit trees including plum, apple, pear and cherry. Whilst the beds are packed with kitchen herbs such as rosemary, thyme, chives, mint and sage, there are also specific plants to attract pollinators and plenty of wildflowers to help the garden thrive.

Working with members of the community and Hyde Park Source, the space was designed to be accessible with shallow seated planters built at wheelchair accessible height.

The community investment officer, Tom Whitworth, arranged for the project to go ahead, commenting “A big thanks was needed for all the hard work put in by the Greenfingers team on what was a scorching day. It’s looking fantastic and people are already getting some good use from it.”

Greenfingers are proud to have helped improve the space, getting involved with everything from arranging the delivery of plants and compost to assisting with labour and planting flowers and shrubs. We hope all the residents enjoy the new community garden!
